Optative Theatrical Laboratories invites you to
MECCA BURNING, a free and fiery street performance on the evening of December
3rd, 2007, following the main event of the MECCA Awards Ceremony at La Sala
Rosa, 4848 St. Laurent Boulevard. Estimated time: 10 pm.
On Monday, December 3rd, Donovan King will burn the Montreal English Critics Circle Award (MECCA) he received for "Call Me" outside of the 2007 MECCA Ceremonies in Montreal. This will be a theatrical protest of the MECCA Committee, comprised of almost every English theatre critic in town, and their refusal to acknowledge anything activist, progressive or challenging corporate culture and in particular, the racism inherent in "Canada's first play", Marc Lescarbot's Theatre of Neptune in New France. Despite national media coverage, Montreal theatre writers didn't even mention efforts by the OTL to counter the official 400th anniversary of the work and expose it's inherent racism through the Sinking Neptune project (A VIDEO OF THIS PROJECT IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE). This isn't the first time this committee refused to acknowledge theatrical challenges and even unmasked real theatre when it was right in their faces. Click here to read the text of Circle Jerked. This performance is a wake-up call to Montreal theatre journalists. For a detailed analysis of why we're doing this, please read Donovan King's letter. Below is a video trailer for the Sinking Neptune project, one of the many critical theatre pieces ignored by the MECCA Committee
